My husband and I became foster and adoptive parents in June of 2011. We did not fully understand what we were getting ourselves into, we just knew we wanted to grow our family. In December of 2011, we met a 3 year old little boy who would later become our son. He came to us with Reactive Attachment Disorder, PTSD, Gastrointestinal Issues and Sensory Processing Disorder.
Our 3 year old controlled every facet of his life from his schedule to what he would put in his mouth…we had a bucket as a permanent fixture for mealtime for 6 months and he would purge anything that came into contact with his mouth.
May of 2012 we were introduced to Neurofeedback and it changed our world!
After only FIVE days of neurofeedback, he was no longer reciting the schedule for the day and he was no longer throwing food back up. Praise God!
Fast forward to September of 2013, we took in a little 21 month old with Autism and in the spring of 2014, we were told our 16 year old had Aspergers.
The fall of 2014, I left my corporate career and began studying Neurofeedback as a way to help my family and now it has become my career and passion working with families with Autism and Developmental trauma.
Our then 21 month old is now 7! A year ago he was still considered non-verbal and developmentally that of about a 3 1/2 year old. we were looking at communication devices to help him at school and kept getting denied by insurance.
We were having constant melt downs because he was so frustrated that we didn’t understand what he wanted.
Boo was always very hesitant to allow me to do neurofeedback with him but last summer, after spending the summer watching other kids do neurofeedback, he decided he wanted to too!
Two months after starting neurofeedback with him, words were forming and then within a short period of time we had two and three word sentences.
Today, our 7 yo is developmentally a 4 – 5 year old, speaking sentences, expressing how he feels and is using communication like any child. We still have our challenges but communication has been key to saying good-bye to so many of the meltdowns and frustrations.
Neurofeedback has given my family hope, it has helped to give my 7 year old words, helped to calm and regulate my ADHD/ODD 10 year old, helped my husband manage his chronic pain and has given this mama a sense of peace that my boys and family will be ok.
I have been where many of you are right now, and I know the struggles are real. I also know the options you face have been limited…until now.
